Graduate TA Handbook and Resources

A Handbook for Teaching Assistants and Teaching Fellows in Arts & Sciences

When Things Go Wrong

Ideally your time as a teaching assistant will go smoothly, but sometimes things don't go as planned. Here you will find information to help you know where to go for help. We have two sections for you: one for issues you may have with faculty (particularly the instructor of record for your course), and one for issues you may have with students. Hopefully this will help you feel a little less lost when things don't go as planned.

What if I experience mistreatment or harassment?

As a TA or TF at W&M, you are expected to act in a professional manner and in accordance with university policies. Likewise you should expect to be treated professionally and courteously. In particular, if you experience any forms of harassment or sexual harassment, you should seek out support and help. If you experience sexual harassment or misconduct, the Haven offers a good place to start to get confidential support and to learn about options and resources available to you. Read more from the Haven about your options and rights. To receive support regarding other forms of inappropriate treatment, the Graduate Ombudsperson is a good place to start if you're not sure what action to take.
