Living Library at William & Mary Libraries

Find common ground through dialogue at the W&M Living Library, 3-7pm on March 22, 2024.

Day of Details

  • The fundamental rule: respect your Storyteller and follow the ground rules established for the event. This ensures a safe and comfortable space for books and readers.
  • You will have 20 minutes with the Storyteller you've chosen, to hear their story and engage in a Q&A conversation. We've provided some buffer time between sessions in case conversation runs slightly over, but to keep the event running smoothly we will be keeping a pretty tight eye on the time.
  • After the Storyteller you've checked out has finished sharing their story, you'll have an opportunity to ask questions and engage in a dialogue. We've provided "conversation starter" questions to help Storytellers and their audience begin a dialog.
  • Unless given express permission to share, please keep confident what your Storyteller and other participants have shared with you.

Conversation Starters

  • Could you tell me about yourself?
  • What experience has had the most impact on making you the person you are today?
  • What is a typical day like for you?
  • Why did you want to be a Human Book? What do you hope to accomplish?
  • Do you wish you could go back in time to change a decision you made? Any regrets?
  • What's a good thing happening in your life right now? What makes it good?
  • What were some of the more difficult aspects of your life? What made it difficult?
  • What do you do for fun?
  • Can you tell me three things about yourself that make you unique?
  • How do you deal with adversity?
  • Is there a community or a support system that you're a part of?
  • Do you have any advice for someone going through a situation similiar to yours?
