HIST 100: What is Hollywood? (Fall 2023)

What is a Primary Source?

Secondary Sources are materials written after the event. Examples:

  • Books
  • Articles
  • Documentaries

Primary Sources are the direct historic article or event being examined, or contemporary materials about the event/film. Examples:

  • The film itself
  • Reviews of the film printed when it was released
  • Contemporary newspaper articles or interviews about the film

NOTE: Whether a a source is primary or secondary depends on the topic being studied. Example:

  • The film "All Quiet on the Western Front" is a secondary source if your topic is World War 1, because it was produced well-after the conflict.
  • But the film becomes a primary source if the topic is how World War 1 is remembered in 1930 when the film was released.
