HIST 100: What is Hollywood? (Fall 2023)

There are Eight searches your team has to complete.

After you finish each, call over the librarian. If your answer is correct, I'll show you the next question. First team to win gets a prize!

1) Find a Book!

Using our library catalog, find a book about the history of Metro Goldwyn Mayer

  • Hints:
    • Use the main library catalog
    • Limit to books
    • use quotation marks and AND  [remember to capitalize AND OR NOT]
    • There is only 1 book in the collection specifically about MGM

2) Find an academic article!

Using one of our subject databases, find an article about the history of Orson welles AND war of the worlds.  
The article needs to be peer reviewed and through a *film studies* academic lens.

  • Hints:
    • Use one of the subject databases on this guide, specifically the one most related to film & media studies.
    • use quotation marks and AND searching
    • Limited to peer review.
    • There are only ~3 articles you might find that fit this critia.

3) Find a Primary Source / Popular Review!

Use Entertainment Industry Magazine Archive to find a review of the remake of A man for all seasons that stars Charlton Heston, not the original 1966 film.

  • Hints
    • don't forget to narrow to reviews.
    • if you know the publication date of the remake, limit the publication date forward to exclude 1966.
    • Use quotation makes & AND

4) Find the AFI entry

Find the entry in the AFI Catalog for the 1930 American version of All Quiet on the Western Front

  • HINTS
    • Be sure to identify the correct version of the film

 

5) Find a Book Chapter!

Using the Library Catalog, find a chapter about film noir and race.

  • Hints
    • Use Boolean searching (quotation marks and AND)
    • Start by limiting search results to books only.
    • Remember that books titles don't always reflect the content of all the chapters.
    • There are multiple possible answers to this question.

6) Identify the Media Studies Librarian!

I'm actually the History library!  Who are the TWO film and media studies librarians?

7) Find a scholarly article reviewing a film

Find a peer reviewed article in which an American Historian examining the historical context of the film Casablanca. 

  • HINTS
    • Use one of the subject databases on this guide, specifically the one most related to history.
    • Be sure to limit to peer review.

 

8) Everyone in your group needs to make an ILL account

Finally, have everyone in your group sign up for an ILL account.
