Finding Works of Literature

Searching from the Libraries homepage for Books & Media (aka our catalog) will get you started with finding monographs (books) or poems for your research.

Pro search tips:

  • Searching for work by your author? In advanced search, search for their last name with the "Author/creator" field selected.
  • Searching for work about your author? In advanced search, search for their last name with the "Subject" field selected.
  • W&M Libraries contains a large percentage of ebooks, but don't let that stop you from looking for physical books, too! Browsing the library stacks in the section related to your topic can be a wonderful way to discover books on your topic that didn't come up in a catalog search.

Finding Artwork

ARTstor, a W&M Libraries Resource, contains digital images of works of art across all mediums and time periods. Search for your author's last name in the "Creator" field.

Finding Film

The Libraries will likely have some films by your filmmaker, which you can find by searching from the Libraries homepage for Books & Media (aka our catalog). If those don't appeal to you, you can request another film on DVD through Interlibrary Loan (account setup required first)--it doesn't cost you anything.

  • Try searching for your filmmaker's last name in Advanced Search, using either the Author/Creator or Subject fields.

Finding Music

Music Online, a W&M Libraries Resource, provides unlimited streaming music from musicians and composers of all genres. Search for your musician's last name.

Finding Scholars' Works

Searching from the Libraries homepage for All will get you started with finding either books or articles written by your scholar.

  • Try searching for your scholar's last name in Advanced Search, using the Author/Creator field.
