Letters, 16 March and 21 July 1835, of A. H. Hand, Princeton, N.J. to his cousin Augustus Cornwall, Catskill, New York, giving advice on being a student and discussing the value of an education.Typescripts available. Supplement to collection in 2009: a paper explaining the relationship of the cousins, a biography of both men, and a genealogy report of the Cornwall Family and descendants of John and Rebecca Hand. Sent by a descendant.

Financial and legal papers of Major William B. Stone, a lawyer in Port Tobacco, Maryland. Includes a letter, dated 11 May 1848, by T. S. Stone to "Tom" at Princeton University urging the improvement of his penmanship and the abandonment of the use of tobacco, and extolling the virtues of physical education. One document mentions Peter Vivian Daniel and another concerns Stone's candidacy for a circuit judgeship.

Papers, 1879-1915, of the Olney family of Newaygo County, Michigan. Includes letters to Bert Olney at various addresses in Indiana and Michgan, which relate school incidents and discuss political matters, such as James Garfield's presidency. There are also letters between Bert and Alice Olney and their sons, Albert J. Olney and Clinton Olney. Albert J. and Clinton Olney were both studying agriculture at (what is now) Michigan State University.

Papers, 1810-1943, of the Hall and Moore families of New York, Richmond, Va. and Williamsburg, Va. Includes wills, estate papers, legal and financial transactions, 1810-1915, of Jacob Hall, Sarah Hall and Cunningham Hall; and Bishop Richard Channing Moore, Virginia Moore, Harriet Glenworth Moore, Margaretta Moore and Louise Moore. Contains correspondence, 1854-1876, between Zebulon S. Farland and Ellen Douglas Gordon Farland; letters, 1906-1928, to Margaret (Farland) Hall, from her children, Emily Hall, Channing Hall, Joseph Hall, and John Lesslie Hall concerning education and World War I.

Collection includes papers, 1656-1848, concerning Essex County, Va. including land records and wills, many of which relate to the Rowzee family. Many of the records date from the seventeenth century. The collection also includes correspondence, 1830-1920, of members of the Baird family including letters, 1859-1911, of Edward R. Baird while attending the University of Virginia, serving in Pickett's Division and as superintendent of schools in Essex County. There are also letters of William Baird while attending the University of Virginia and business correspondence of the family with publishers and with cigar manufacturers.

Papers, 1864-1910, of the Christian family of Richmond, Va. including letters of Samuel M. Cooper at Virginia Military Institute and the University of Virginia; Frank Palmer Christian at Woodberry Forest School; and papers of the Richmond Female Humane Association (Leigh St. Orphan Asylum) and the Young Women's Christian Association of Richmond.

Copy of an April 7, 1927 letter from John G. James to Samuel Y. Ferguson about Andrew Jackson and the VMI (Virginia Military Institute) Cadets in the Civil War and about Charles A. James, a student at the University of Virginia, who served with Robert E. Lee.

Papers of Minor Wine Thomas, Sr. Includes 1928 response to Dr. Minor Wise Thomas of the State Teachers College in Radford, Virginia from J.A.C. Chandler of William & Mary about any vacancies in the Department of Education. Also includes letters between Minor Wine Thomas and Channing Hall, AshtonDovel, J.A.C. Chandler of William & Mary and others about surveys of land in James City County and Williamsburg, Virginia.

Papers, circa 1930s to 1960s, of Colonel Lane Carlson, originally of Scotts Bluff, Nebraska. Colonel Lane Carlson was the first female colonel in the United States Army. Primarily includes letters from throughout her life, beginning with her time at Sullins College in Bristol, Virginia, and the University of Missouri. After graduating from the University of Missouri, Carlson worked for a radio station and then joined the Women's Auxiliary Army Corps. During World War II she writes letters from a variety of bases across the United States; after the war ended, there are letters from Japan and China as well. There are also letters written to Colonel Carlson, primarly from her parents and a small number of friends. There are also photographs and a copy of her masters thesis from Stanford University.

The Zelda Haus Papers cover her time at both Marion Junior College and Susquehanna University. Haus attended Marion Junior College, a woman's college, from 1923 to 1925. While there she took part in numerous religiously focused organizations such as the Lutheran League. These organizations focused on both domestic issues and international issues such as the Armenian Genocide. In 1925, Haus enrolled in Susquehanna University, located on the banks of the Susquehanna River in Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania. While there she devoted much of her time to attaining her teacher's certificate. Haus maintained regular correspondence with her family, particularly her mother, and friends throughout this time period.

Letters written to Vinda Elizabeth Kibler, also called Kitty, between 1917-1924 while she was at Bridgewater College and later at the State Teacher's College in Harrisonburg, Virginia. Most letters are from her mother in Woodville, VA, and often included a separate note from her father or other relatives. Also included are two letters from a pen pal in France.

Memory Book of Mary Ware Galt of Williamsburg containing memorabilia, programs, photographs, souvenirs, correspondence, and ephemera from Williamsburg, Virginia and the Tidewater area, plus from her days as a student at Hampton College (1908-1909) in Hampton, Virginia and Stuart Hall (1909-1910) in Staunton, Virginia.

Diary, 1929, of Anna Bob Taylor, a teenager from Houston, Texas. Includes information about a trip taken to Europe, including stops in England, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Belgium, and the Netherlands from June until August. Also includes information about her day at school, people with whom she meets, activities in which she participates, and her relationship with her mother. Events include dates on which she goes, going to the movies, and taking a trip to Chattanooga with other students. She seems to be a student at the Ward-Belmont Girls School in Nashville, Tennessee. There is also a list of graduation parties and their dates at the end of the diary.

Notebook, 1863-1864, of "Prudie" [Prudence] Saunders of "Rocky Hill," near Courtland, Ala, a student at Tuskaloosa [sic] Female College, Tuscaloosa, Ala. The book which contains French exercises, also includes a diary, 1-23 April 1864, verses, and a list, 1 May 1864, of students at the college.

The papers of Miss Lena Parker, personal and professional, who was a graduate of State Teachers College in Farmville, Virginia and a teacher in Cumberland County, Virginia. She lived in Cartersville, Virginia. Correspondence from friends, family, the State Teachers College, schools where she was employed and children she had taught. The bulk of the letters are from Harry Leach and Edward Embly, both living in Washington, D.C., who give descriptions of daily life.

Scrapbook, ca. 1874-1884, of Abbie Louisa Hill, Beloit, Wisconsin, containing handwritten notes, prints, circulars, programs, wedding invitations, paper dolls, and newspaper clippings. Many of the clippings relate to Beloit College.

Diary and notebook , 1854 of Fannie C. Carleton while attending Judson (Institute) which is most likely what is now called Judson College in Marion, Alabama. One series contains Budgets, from 1963-1976, and capital outlay requests from 1966-1972, that were submitted to the Virginia State Legislature. They include appropriations requests and justifications. Another series contains publications produced by Christopher Newport from 1959-1977.

Biennial budget exhibits including justifications, revenue estimates, capital outlay requests, and budget summaries for 1962-68 and 1972-76. Capital outlay requests prepared for the state legislature. They include justifications for each proposed project and the amount each would cost. Projects are listed in order of priority. This collection also includes material that was removed from the University Archives Publications Collection related to Richard Bland College.

One series consists of material that was removed from the University Archives Publications Collection related to the Richmond Professional Institute and its predecessors. The publications include the student newspapers The Atlas and The Proscript, accreditation reports, athletic reports, as well as miscellaneous brochures and ephemera. The inventory for this accession is available below in the finding aid/inventory section of this finding aid. Another accession includes reports prepared by the Richmond Professional Institute detailing income and expenditures, with lists of insurance policies and information about the investment in a physical plant.

The University Archives Greetings File Collection includes greetings sent by the College of William & Mary to other institutions as well as those received by the College. A card catalog located in the SCRC indexes the items available in this collection. The card catalog was maintained and added to through January 2007.

This collection contains fliers announcing the "Summer Institute on College Teaching" run by the Virginia Tidewater Consortium. Faculty from the College of William & Mary may have attended the Institute.

This collection contains fliers, announcements, and calendars from the University Center in Virginia, an organization which advocated cooperation from among its member institutions in higher education. The College of William & Mary was one such institution. The organization was founded as The Richmond Area University Center in 1946. They changed their name to the University Center in Virginia in 1957. Included are announcements for visiting scholars/speakers to the College; a 1974 announcement of the new University Center in Virginia president; calendars of events; and copies of their publication, Bulletin from 1947-1949.

This collection contains programs from the 39th annual meeting of the Southern University Conference held in Williamsburg April 22-24, 1976. The theme of the conference was "Towards the Third American Century." Acc. 2009.094 includes correspondence, financial records, programs, and related material from the Southern University Conference records previously held by Birmingham-Southern College.

This collection includes the following material: A Certain Place of Universal Learning: A Master Plan for Development, May, 1959, prepared by William F. Swindler, Director of Development; Goals, Purposes, Scope, 1961; Report to the Commonwealth of Virginia State Council of Higher Education; and Members of the Advisory Committee on Coordination of Public Higher Education in Virginia.

The collection of the Faculty Women's Caucus at the College of William & Mary includes correspondence from 1973-1996 related to women faculty salaries and tenure; maternity leave and childcare; EEO and Affirmative Action; women's athletics, dealing mostly with Title IX, both within the College of William & Mary and the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA); sexual harassment; campus security; the Women's Studies program; and discriminatory findings. Also included are salary survey reports, William & Mary "climate" studies, various copies of the newsletter - Caucus News, event fliers, articles, newspaper clippings, related publications, and other resource material.
