HIST 150: Gandhi in the World (Fall 2024)

What do they do?

An Annotated Bibliography provides a summary of a work, address:

  • the topic
  • the argument (not the same as a topic
  • the sources and or methods
  • how it differs from other works on the topic
  • was it convincing in supporting the argument?
    • what did it do well? what did it do poorly?

Example:

In the 2022 article "Women's Struggles in the Kashmir Military War," Devina Neogi examines the impact that 51 years of conflict between India's Military Force and locals of Kashmir has had upon women in the region, arguing the conflict can only be fully understood by recognizing and examining women's experiences of political and physical violence. Neogi also summarizes humans rights violations in Kashmir and the effect of Article 370 upon women, before providing four policy recommendations: First, a Women's Rights Commissions needs to be established in Jammu and Kashmir; second, female police personnel should be added to the Jammu and Kashmir police forces; third, legal protections need to exist for widows and "half-widows.; Finally, armed forces need to be held accountable for actions of violence.  A strength of this work is that it compiles and summarizes a large body of literature into a brief overview work. This makes the work an easy entry point into the topic.  A weakness of the work, however, it the total dependence upon secondary sources, as no original research nor data collection was undertaken by the author. Overall, it is a useful summary of the topic with a good bibliography, though it will need to be supplemented by additional, research-oriented articles.
