HIST 150: Memories and Historical Narratives in China (Fall 2023)

Directions

There are Eight searches your team has to complete.

After you finish each, call over the librarian. If your answer is correct, I'll show you the next question. First team to win gets a prize!

1) Find a Book!

Using our library catalog, find a book about the Political Activity of Students during Tiananmen Square Incident 

  • Hints:
    • Use the main library catalog
    • Limit to books
    • use Quotation Marks and AND  [remember to capitalize AND OR NOT]
    • There is about 5 book in the collection specifically about this topic.

2) Find an academic article!

Using the one of the highlighted subject databases, find a peer reviewed article about the Political Activity of Students at Tiananmen square.
The article needs to be peer reviewed.

  • Hints:
    • Use one of the three history databases for articles listed on this guide.
    • use quotation marks and AND searching
    • Limited to peer review.
    • There many articles you might find that fit this criteria.
    • Most of the search terms from your book search should work here, but you may also need to change them slightly after a search or two.

3) Find a Primary Source in the Catalog

Use the main library catalog and the how-to guide, find memoirs written by individuals involved in the Cultural Revolution.

  • Hints
    • Use quotation marks & AND
    • limit to Books
    • "memoirs" isn't the term you want to use.
    • there are ~20 options in the catalog

4) Find the reference entry

Find the reference entry feature in the Catalog, find a reference entry about Mao Zedong

  • HINTS
    • Be sure to use quotation marks and AND
    • Use the reference entry option after your initial search

 

5) Find a Book Chapter!

Using the Library Catalog, find a chapter about Education during the Great Leap Forward

  • Hints
    • Use Boolean searching (quotation marks and AND)
    • Use the Chapter filter won't work this time -- based on the titles, open up top results and skim the table of contents
    • Limit results to books.
    • Remember that books titles don't always reflect the content of all the chapters.
    • There is only one good answer to this question.

6) Identify the University Archives Librarian

I'm the History librarian!  Who is the University Archivist? (show me their library contact information)

7) Find a book review

Using the library catalog's reviews feature, find a book review for a book about the Opium War.

  • HINTS
    • use boolean 
    • use the book review feature
    • There are several options

 

8) Everyone in your group needs to make an ILL account

Finally, have everyone in your group sign up for an ILL account

**Be sure to register as a student, not faculty or staff (for some reason, that is the default setting)**
