ARTH 330 Architecture & Spatial Justice

This guide is for the Spring 2025 ARTH 330 class taught by Dr. Sibel Zandi-Sayek

Introduction

When using images, it is best to assume that ALL images on the internet have copyright, i.e. all rights reserved, unless clearly stated otherwise. It is presumptuous to conclude that all uses for school are educational uses, and therefore fall under fair use. Fair use is decided case-by-case and only by a qualified judge. This also applies to using images for social media.

Google images allows you to filter by usage rights for commercial or CC license.

If you find an image in a archive, digital collection site, or other webpage, you can usually find the copyright information by looking around the home page or about page. Also, a good way to find information, including copyright, on any webpage is to check for side boxes or information at the bottom of the page.

For example, if you scroll all the way to the bottom of this website, you will find the copyright information which reads, "Copyright © Mary Ann Sullivan. I have photographed (on site), scanned, and manipulated all the images on these pages. Please feel free to use them for personal or educational purposes. They are not available for commercial purposes"

Databases

Using the databases that we have available at W&M Libraries there are two different ways that you can conduct an image search.

Some databases allow you to use an "Image Search" from the homepage which looks like this:

Others require you to use side bar filter like this:
