Be sure to limit to books and ebooks.
Pay special attention to subject terms: Once you know the official subject terms, it becomes much easier to find material on your topic. Some related subjects include:

You can use a specific state as a subject term, or the phrase "southern states"

1. Start by writing out your question or topic.
   1. What is the history of LGBT student groups at W&M?
2. identify key terms
   1. William and Mary 
   2. LGBT
   3. Student Groups
3. identify potential synonyms
   1. William and Mary ; William & Mary
   2. LGBT ; Gay ; bisexual ; Variations of LGBT
   3. Students ; student groups ; student organizations
4. Use AND OR NOT to create search phrases. 
   1. ("william and mary" OR "william & mary") AND (LGBT* OR Gay OR bisexual*) AND student*
5. Conduct several searches, revising keywords backed on subject terms & commonly used language in the articles/books.

One of the results that comes up over and over is A guide to LGBTQ+ inclusion on campus, post-Pulse Stead, Virginia, editor. 2017.
Look at the record. You'll see two key subhead headings:

Gay college students -- United States
Sexual minority college students -- United States
After much searching, these are the searches we want.

This works the same was as our catalog, but includes books not held in our collection.

Be sure to go to advanced search and limit to:
non fiction and Non juvenile
