Important Hints for Primary Sources in History

  • Use as few keywords as possible. Usually two connected by AND
  • Spend time finding the correct database. Pay attention to theme, scope, and material types
  • The best way to find primary sources is to read secondary sources: what types of primary sources are they using?
  • Found which of the 250 primary source databases or 150 newspaper databases is the best fit for your project.
    • This takes some time but is Very much worth it.
    • Keyword search in the database list (Ex "civil war" or "women" or "music") to narrow the list of databases
    • OR look at the subject lists to find the most important databases on your topic.
