Genealogical Research

An overview of resources available at Swem Library for Genealogists along with ideas for other places to conduct research in the area.

Easy Reference for Finding Books in Swem Stacks

Swem has a large collection of books on local history that can be found in the stacks in the call number range of F1-F1000. As you might expect, our collections are more robust in areas nearer Virginia and are progressively thinner the further West you go. Still, there are a number of local historical journals (see this page for some examples), lists of collections in historical societies, local phone directories (for VA cities), and other resources. For ease of discovery, you can find out more about specific states by following this guide. These call numbers can also be used to find materials in our Rebman Virginia Genealogy Reference Collection. For all these numbers, imagine each one starting with an "F." If you need help locating these in the stacks, please ask either a reference librarian or circulation staff member. Also, note that local histories about Hawaii are located in the call number DU620.

Note: I have bolded the large geographic divisions that organize this list.
