Newspapers at W&M Libraries

Recommended resources for conducting newspaper research.

Available in Print

Our physical news holdings often provide access to more issues of local newspapers than you can find online. Available coverage of each newspaper can vary from a few issues in a year to the full run of many years in a row. Use the journal finder to search for the newspaper you're interested in and see what coverage is available.

The following major contemporary local newspapers are available in print or microfilm.

  • Daily Press
  • Richmond Times-Dispatch
  • Virginia Gazette
  • The Virginian-Pilot

How to locate and access newspapers in print

The most straightforward way to find which newspapers we have in print is to perform a Journal Title Search in the Journal Finder:

  1. Use the Journal Title Search box to search for a specific title name or a keyword in the title. The Journal Finder should locate all names that the newspaper has been known by. For instance, searching "Richmond Times-Dispatch" also locates the historical Richmond Times.
  2. Click on one of the entries for the newspaper you wish to read. Note that due to newspaper title changes, there may be several entries. Select the title the paper is known by today.
  3. Once selected, the catalog entry will tell you what years are available and where in the library the issues are located.
    1. For instance, this record for the Richmond Times-Dispatch shows that the Libraries have the paper on microfilm until 2018 and more recent issues in the Current Newspapers section.

If you don't have a particular title in mind, you can search by keyword in the Books and Media tab of the catalog. Searching by subject for "Virginia newspapers" will let you view the newspapers we have available in print or online.
