Be sure to use Caps for AND, OR, NOT when searching.
AND - searches for books and articles containing both terms. Example: "Youth groups" AND "transitional justice" AND argentina
OR - searches for one of the words. Example: Resistance AND dictatorship* AND (music OR art)
NOT - exclude a term. Example: NOT "United states"
Parenthetical notes () - excellent for OR or NOT searches. Like a math equation, the database will do this part first.
Example: "state violence" AND (motives OR causes)
Quotation Marks ""- Links words together in the search. Works best for phrases or proper names.
Example: "Civil War" ; "Liberation theology"
Warning: You might exclude results. "Bolivian Civil War" will exclude all instances where works just say "civil war"
Asterisk * - Allows you to search several word endings at once, without using OR.
Example: wom* will cover women, woman, womens, womanhood.
Example: Chile* brings up Chile, Chilean, Chileans, Chilecito
Warning: You may get unexpected results. Chile* also brings up results on Chileab if you're in a religious studies database
